The Pakistan Super League also known as HBL PSL, is a premier men’s Twenty20 cricket league in Pakistan, initiated by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in 2015. The league features six city-based franchise teams, with Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars being the most successful, having won the title twice each. The current champions, Lahore Qalandars, successfully defended their title in the 2023 season.

Establishment and Launch

The PSL was officially launched in September 2015, with the First season starting on February 4, 2016, in the United Arab Emirates. Notable cricket figures like Wasim Akram and Rameez Raja served as ambassadors for the league. The first two seasons had five teams, representing the capital cities of Pakistan’s provinces and the Federal capital. Multan Sultans joined as the sixth team in the 2018 season.

Expansion

Despite discussions about adding a sixth team in 2017, the decision was delayed. However, Multan Sultans joined the league in the 2018 season. The franchise rights of PSL were initially held by Schon Properties but later changed hands due to contractual issues.

Format

The PSL follows a double round-robin format, with each team playing the others twice. The top four teams advance to the playoffs, which utilizes the Page playoff system. The league sticks to ICC rules, introducing the DRS system in T20s. Points are awarded for wins, and tiebreakers include run rate, number of wins, and head-to-head results.

Schedule

PSL typically takes place in February and March, except for interruptions, such as the one caused by COVID-19. The league initially precedes the Indian Premier League (IPL), but in 2025, there will be an overlap between PSL and IPL.

Teams

As of the latest information, the six teams in the PSL are Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi, and Quetta Gladiators. Each team is associated with a city and has its home ground, owner, captain, and coach.
