Why Ab de Villiers is Not Playing PSL

AB de Villiers is set to be omitted from the Lahore Qalandars roster ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Draft. ESPNcricinfo has gleaned that his reconsideration stems from a need to “manage his workload.” This decision is a significant departure for the South African cricket sensation.

AB de Villiers last participated in representative cricket during his tenure with Middlesex in September in England’s Vitality Blast T20 competition. His upcoming schedule includes commitments with the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League, followed by the IPL, where he features for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. In the case of the Heat, de Villiers will be accessible for the latter half of the tournament, commencing post-Christmas.

When questioned about his withdrawal from the PSL, de Villiers cited the necessity to “effectively regulate his workload, adopting a sporadic approach.”

The PSL Draft is scheduled for December 6, and the six franchises have until December 1 to finalize their retentions, allowing them to retain up to eight players and engage in trading picks.

The Qalandars enlisted De Villiers in the previous season, where he played seven matches in the UAE and two in Pakistan. Regrettably, he couldn’t partake in the Pakistan leg due to a recurring back injury.

His involvement in the PSL last season was met with tremendous enthusiasm, especially as the PCB made concerted efforts to lure prominent players and top-notch teams to Pakistan. De Villiers performed exceptionally well, amassing 218 runs with an impressive average of 54.50 and a striking rate of 128.99 across seven games. However, despite his contributions, the Qalandars were at the bottom of the table. Remarkably, they have consistently occupied one of the bottom two positions in the four seasons thus far.

The Qalandars have a history of acquiring marquee names, often securing the most prominent stars. Yet, this strategy has sometimes translated into on-field success. Unfortunate circumstances have also plagued them; for instance, Chris Gayle endured a rough patch during the inaugural season in 2016, and Yasir Shah faced suspension for a banned substance violation in the same year.

Over the years, players of Mustafizur Rahman’s, Chris Lynn’s, Shaun Tait’s, Dwayne Bravo’s, and Anton Devcich’s caliber have withdrawn from the squad due to various injuries. Notably, in the previous season, the team’s captain, Mohammad Hafeez, sustained a hand injury during the second match, leading the Qalandars into a crisis they couldn’t recover despite de Villiers’ valiant efforts.

Why is Ab de Villiers Not Playing IPL

“I can no longer partake in cricket due to surgery on my right eye,” stated A.B. de Villiers. De Villiers, renowned for his exceptional cricket career, has played 184 IPL matches, accumulating an impressive 5162 runs, predominantly with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. His retirement announcement in 2021, conveyed through Twitter, mirrored his latest decision.

Former South African batsman A.B. de Villiers has reiterated his stance of not returning to the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a player. In a recent YouTube video, de Villiers expressed his well-thought-out decision, emphasizing that he has no intention of resuming his IPL career.

“On my YouTube channel, I’ve contemplated this matter, and I must affirm it will not transpire,” asserted de Villiers. He further elucidated, “Throughout my career, I have consistently endeavored to display loyalty to both fans and teams.”

De Villiers has had a pivotal role with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL since 2011, amassing a remarkable 4522 runs in 144 innings with an impressive strike rate of 158.33. His consistent run-scoring performance significantly contributed to the team’s success.

Recognizing his illustrious career and invaluable contributions, RCB inducted de Villiers into their Hall of Fame and retired his jersey number in March 2023, underscoring his profound impact on the franchise.

De Villiers remarked, “I’ve adhered to a principle instilled in me from a young age – clarity and commitment in decision-making.” He reflected on his decision, stating, “Over the past few seasons, I sensed a waning energy level on the field.” He added, “I only played a few months each year, and doubting my performance was disheartening. If I can’t aspire to be the best and elevate this game, it’s time for me to step aside,” concluded A.B. de Villiers.

Beyond his statistical achievements, de Villiers has delivered brilliant performances that have left an incredible mark on IPL history. One standout instance was his match-winning exhibition against the Rajasthan Royals in October 2020, where he compiled 55 runs from a mere 22 balls, decisively shifting the tide in favor of RCB.
